7:32 am
were you thinking. >> and that's the question we want answered. and let me ask you about that. jim cleburn wants him to apologize or face public approval. do you think that has any legs? >> i doubt it. the speaker said she would just as soon move on and so would the white house. there are maybe some people who think it was clearly over the line for him to do that. he admits that now. so there may be some people that want to exact their pound of flesh. but i think that the wiser heads in congress, among the democratic leadership thinks let's not get caught in the side show and go forward with the bill. >> and obviously the big speech, some lawmakers saying maybe we can work things out this week. tell me who you have on. >> we haven't been fully booked but we're talking to one of the moderate congressman -- or senator who was against the public option.
7:33 am
we'll talk to arlen hatch who is against the idea and fill it out with some republicans and democrats. interestingly enough, i don't think the president has picked up many, if any, republican votes. but i think he was trying to appeal to independent voters and to seniors to say, look, whether i get republican votes or not there are republican ideas in this. it is a compromise. and i think the most important thing that happened is you're not hearing democrats now saying if i don't have this in the bill, i can't vote for it. democrats seem more uted than before the speech and in the end if he has a united democratic party, the president will get what he wants. >> and chris, you also have andy sterne coming on to talk labor. >> he's the head of the sciu. the biggest union in the country. we'll talk to him about health care reform and have him tell you it's a movie story why this debate is personal with him. >> and congressman joe wilson on the show. thank you for joining us.
7:34 am
you can watch chris this morning on sunday after fox 5 morning news. we have the latest on the traffic with julie wright. >> thanks to mother nature and the wet pavement, we're dealing with a slow go leaving 95 toward georgia avenue. look closy through the rain drops and this is the beltway at university boulevard. all of this was headed towards colesville road where we had an accident blocking that left lane. that now out of your way. southbound 270, delays beginning at father hurley. the slow traffic remains on the beltway continuingowd toward river road with an earlier accident just cleared. so again another four miles worth of slow traffic as you travel south of 270 toward river road. so overall a miserable commute from germantown before the pace improves. in virginia, still busy cleaning up this wreck. this one involving the overturned vehicle which looks like it's being rolled on to a roll back as we speak. southbound 395, south of washington boulevard at ridge road, two left lanes will squeeze by. delays beginning after the 14th street bridge. northbound 395, lanes are open
7:35 am
at the h.o.v. and the main line. slowing from the beltway toward duke street. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. this 8th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, volunteering is taking center stage. it has been declared a national day of service and remembrance. so how can you get in on this and participant? joining us this morning, curtis cannon, director of partner services for d.c. cares and hank milany, senior v.p. for wal-mart. and this is a partnership between greater d.c. cares and wal-mart. what does this mean for wal- mart, this huge corporation to be behind you in your effort? >> well it's a huge help to us. we love to have him here. it brings a lot of resources and a name to such an important day, which is the inaugural 9/11 national day of service and remembrance which is
7:36 am
culminating a summer of service that wal-mart has participated in with the entire summer and this is the culmination of that. >> and the president declaring this a summer of service. and why get involved, hank? >> well at wal-mart we're proud to be partnered with d.c. cares and we want to help the president bring his vision to life for service. and this is something that our associates are very committed to and we are very proud of our associates. last year alone our employees donated over a thousand hours and later on this morning we're headed over to rfk stadium to do quilts and pillows for families in the armed services so we're looking forward to a great morning. >> and curtis is does kick off today. tell us what we're doing today.
7:37 am
>> we're bringing out over 4,000 volunteers to create quilts for children in the arms services, but doing part cleanups and fire kits for the d.c. firefighters foundation, working at senior centers, schools and d.c. public librairies as well. >> and those are some things you can do today. and just take an extended lunch break and help. it doesn't have to be an extended event. many of us have to work. but you're just saying get involved. and let me ask you because you have a lot of volunteers. what does volunteering do for us? we're n in it for the money. what does it do for your spirit? >> the community needs help. there is a constant need for volunteers in the sector. and as far as volunteers, that feeling of giving back and it is a great way to get to know your community and to meet new people and to network and if you have certain professional skills, it's a great way to
7:38 am
translate those to a new sector that we haven't used them for. >> and i'll just say this. wal-mart is no stranger to giving. this is a special event but the giving does not stop there for the corporation. why is it then so important? you don't have to do any of this, really? >> we offer a local determination to donate almost $400 million to great organizations. and like curtis said, most importantly it's the right thing to do, it's fun and it gives us a great feeling. >> let's talk about the projects for today, because we are pausing to remember the day 9/11. curtis, what specifically can we do today to honor the victims? >> well most importantly, it's a day of service and remembrance. so all of the projects do have the opportunity to remember and reflect on the events that have happened. that is something we wanted to
7:39 am
make sure was a key seam throughout our projects. and our projects are running throughout the day. there are projects in the morning, through lunch and going into the evening. >> and do you think this will continue with the effort? this is the inaugural day of volunteering? do you plan on continuing to make this a special day. >> absolutely. and it's a special day to come out and remember and serve. but there is also a need for volunteers 365 days a year and there are also opportunities to serve. >> and if you're watching today and you want to help, is it too late? do you have your volunteers or can you still help? >> we're getting there. you can go to dccares.org. >> and as far as wal-mart, you have associated coming out? >> yes, it is. >> good luck if your efforts

the redskins. after last year, it was tough for all of us as fans. how do you think they can do this year and is it going to be the defense that will get them through? >> there is a mix. there is the rational guys back here. jason and j.b., who think they won't be that good. and i know the redskins fans will be bitter at two of us. and then you have the blind homers up here. >> they're just haters back there. we're the guy that's believe. >> we're looking at it objectively. they have a great addition to the defense, solid additions to the offense and improved the special teams and if you look at the schedule, it's very favorable. >> mr. objective for all of the people that are watching on fox 5, how many pro-bowlers did the redskins have last year before the season. >> i may have overvalued them. >> it was like 12. >> talking about the redskins going to the superbowl last year. >> that's the first time you've ever been objective. >> all i can tell you, is that the giants game will be
